Interested in becoming a MARSB seed collector?
We are currently seeking individuals to make high quality seed collections in support of MARSB efforts in their local area. Potential collectors must be able to identify native plant species, recognize the difference between fruit and seed, work independently, and be trained in the collection protocol. What is a quality collection? A collection should consist of the following:
• 10,000-30,000 mature seeds
• Collection and preparation of three voucher specimens
• Photographs of both the plant and habitat
• Completed field data form
Collecting mature seed is crucial to maintaining seed viability, thus ensuring this critical natural resource is available for vital conservation and restoration work in the region. Frequent monitoring of target populations for seed maturity is necessary to assure a quality collection. It is imperative that you contact us before you start collecting for MARSB. Why? First, all collectors must remain within the legal boundaries and in good standing with all landholders. Permits are required for native seed collection on public and private lands. Second, an organized approach and strategy towards the collections will maintain the integrity and diversity of species within the seed bank. Third, we want to make sure that you have a full understanding of the protocol before collection.
